The BBC has requested for a new digital application to be included in their existing digital catalogue. Something that could entice young adults to use BBC applications more frequently to gain retention. BBC Fit was created as a result of this, bringing gamification and personalisation elements while avoiding user generated content, following the BBC’s ethos of trust and respect. The mobile application primarily focuses on pre-existing routes all around the UK. Users can challenge others using filter options regarding the difficulty and type of activity e.g. cycling, hiking making the app accessible for all.

The working prototype was designed by following the double diamond process with the first diamond representing the Discover and Define phases. Discovering who are the BBC as well as their core values and understanding the focus group they wish to engage with. That being 18 to 24 year olds. Following this, usability testing was completed using existing fitness apps such as Strava and AllTrails to gather common features in the sector but also pain-points that could arise. Using all the information gathered, this allowed for the focus group to be further defined, gaining an insight of their problems outwith a digital outlook and figuring out solutions as to how might these solutions be solved using a digital application like BBC Fit.

The second diamond represents the Develop and Deliver phases. This included feature prioritisation, what is and is not feasable as well as the structure of the application such as a digital sitemap but also low fidelity sketches to better understand potential user journeys. Following this, wireframes were created to best demonstrate how the content would be structured eventually implementing colour and interactions to allow for further usability testing. Using test results, this led to the final delivery phase whereas a fully working prototype was designed showcasing features such as activity browsing, map viewing, leaderboards, and accessible settings.
